Abu Dhabi: Mullah Yaqoob, the acting Defence Minister of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, met with the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. A head of state of a significant country like the UAE meeting with the Taliban has sparked a debate. There are claims that the UAE will soon recognise the Taliban’s regime in Afghanistan.
Mullah Yaqoob, son of Taliban leader Mullah Omar, visited the UAE along with other Taliban leaders. Afghanistan’s media and Taliban have confirmed that the meeting with the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, took place on Sunday. Anas Haqqani, the second senior-most leader of the Haqqani Network, was also present for the meeting. The Taliban’s ministry of defence announced that the meeting was to strengthen cooperation between the UAE and Afghanistan and to discuss other issues.
Since the Taliban took charge of Afghanistan, several Taliban leaders have frequently visited the Middle East. As the political office of the Taliban is based out of Doha, the capital of Qatar, many leaders visit Qatar regularly and sometimes to the UAE. During these visits, the Taliban leaders have had discussions with countries in the Middle East. However, Mullah Omar’s son and Taliban’s acting Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoob’s direct meeting with the UAE head of state has become the subject of media attention.
The UAE may soon recognise the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The international media also reported that a meeting did occur between the Taliban leaders and the head of state of the UAE. However, neither the UAE nor the Taliban has confirmed it as yet. Even Pakistan, which has advocated for the Taliban internationally, has yet to recognise the Taliban’s regime in Afghanistan. Qatar, which has hosted the political office of the Taliban, has sidestepped this issue. With this background, the visit of Taliban leaders and meeting with the head of state of the UAE is noteworthy.
