For the past few days, tension has arisen between Iran and Afghanistan over water sharing. Iran and the Taliban clashed over the water sharing of the river, known as Helmand in Afghanistan and Hemond in Iran. Following the agreement reached between the then regimes of Iran and Afghanistan five decades ago, Iran had demanded that the Taliban allocate 82 million cubic meters of water reserves for Iran. Iran pointed out that the rivers in the Sistan-Baluchistan province have dried up due to the Taliban’s blocking of this water supply, and there is a big crisis in this area. The President of Iran, Ibrahim Raisi, appealed to the Taliban regime for this. But the Taliban mocked the President of Iran through social media. After this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran gave a month to the Taliban regime. Two days ago, the Foreign Ministry of Iran announced that the rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan was illegal. Iran also suggested that the Taliban establish a comprehensive government in Afghanistan.

Less than a few hours later, heavy clashes broke out between Iranian troops and the Taliban on the border between Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan and Afghanistan’s Nimruz provinces on Saturday. Iran accuses the Taliban of firing the first shot at its soldiers. It has been reported that two soldiers of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were killed in this attack. But Iran’s state news agency said its army suffered heavy losses in the Taliban attack.

Moreover, Abdul Nafi Thakur, spokesman for the Taliban’s internal security department in Afghanistan, blamed Iran for the attack on the Nimruz border. Also, the Taliban informed that an Afghan citizen was killed in the attack on Iran, and an Iranian soldier was killed in their counterattack. The Taliban also released a video of the clash. In this, it is seen that the commander of the Taliban has reached the security post on the border of Iran, and it is seen that the flag of Iran is flying.

In this conflict on both sides, citizens on the border have fled, and tension has arisen in this area. The Taliban announced that the fighting on the Nimroz border had stopped. But the locals claim that the conflict is still going on. Iran has warned that it will not tolerate Taliban attacks. Also, the leaders of Iran are warning that the Taliban should not use the language of threats on the issue of water distribution.

Meanwhile, Western analysts are warning that the conflict between Iran and the Taliban over water sharing will intensify in the near future. Analysts claim that the attacks will be carried out by factions within the Taliban that disapproves of the regime in Iran.
