Taliban cancels its oath taking ceremony

Kabul: Taliban had announced forming a government in Afghanistan on September 11, as the US 9/11 attacks completed 20 years. This announcement indicated the Taliban’s victory in the Afghan war and celebration of the US defeat, said Taliban supporters. But, Taliban’s spokesperson announced cancellation of this event. It is being discussed that Taliban decided to cancel it due to pressure from Qatar. However, the resistance from Russia and Iran – the nations that once adopted the stance favourable to Taliban, is also considered a reason for this cancellation.

Taliban cancels its oath taking ceremonyAt the beginning of this week, Taliban had declared its minister cabinet. Besides, after intense internal disputes and a lot of struggle, Taliban finally announced the inaugural date of its minister cabinet, which was September 11. They had also pasted posters of those ministers on the streets of Kabul. 20 years ago, on September 11, Al-Qaeda’s militants had carried out a notorious attack against the United States. 3000 people lost their lives in this attack.

Every year, the memories of these attacks are remembered as a tribute. In such a situation, by organising the inaugural ceremony on the same date may convey that the Taliban is trying to incite the United States. Taliban’s ardent supporters had welcomed this decision. However, by organising such a programme, Taliban can attract global outrage, said a few analysts. So, Taliban declared the cancellation of this oath-taking ceremony later on Friday.Taliban cancels its oath taking ceremony

However, the Taliban spokesperson did not specify any reason. But, news has surfaced that the United States and NATO nations have pressurised Qatar to cancel this programme. Taliban organising this ceremony on September 11 would be inhumane. Moreover, it would become difficult for the Taliban to gain international support; Qatar is claimed to have conveyed this to the Taliban.

Besides, the firm stance of Russia and Iran may also be the reason for this cancellation by Taliban. Until last week, Russia and Iran had adopted a stance favourable to the Taliban. Also, Taliban had invited Russia, Iran, Turkey, Qatar, alongside Pakistan and China, to this ceremony.Taliban cancels its oath taking ceremony

But, the stance of Russia and Iran seems to have changed after Taliban’s action in Panjshir. Both these nations expressed anger against this Taliban attack. Moreover, Russia and Iran declared not to attend the ceremony of establishing Taliban’s all-inclusive government. This has immensely affected Pakistan. Pakistan was the key organiser of this oath-taking ceremony. Thus, Pakistan’s agitation over this ceremony’s cancellation is evident.
