‘Poland has been threatened that financial penalty will be imposed if it does not repeal judicial reforms that do not fit into the EU rules. The EU is making demands by putting a gun to our heads. If the EU wants to start a Third World War, Poland will use every weapon it has to defend its rights,’ said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Strong reactions have emanated from the EU, along with Poland, over the statements of Prime Minister Morawiecki.

A European Commission spokesman warned that there is no place in the EU for the efforts to exert pressure using a war threat. Marek Belka, a member of the European Parliament, claimed that the Polish Prime Minister has lost his mental balance. Former European Council President Donald Tusk has termed Morawiecki’s remarks as ‘stupid.’

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice Party is pushing for a series of reforms to the constitution and the judiciary. At the same time, Poland opposes the European Union‘s policies on refugees, media rights and other issues. The ruling party has also accused the EU of trying to exercise additional powers on Poland. Against this very background, the Polish Constitutional Court ruled that the provisions of the EU treaty were inconsistent with Polish law. This is considered to be the first time that a member country has openly challenged the legal framework of the EU.

Some member states and senior officials of the federation have suggested that the EU should suspend its financial aid to the country to counter the challenge posed. In the last few days, the EU has begun to increase the pressure further on Poland. In such a situation, the Prime Minister of Poland‘s statement about the Third World War is noteworthy.
