Taiwan should be given more priority than Ukraine for the security of US

Washington: US Senator Josh Hawley demanded that the US give more priority to Taiwan instead of Ukraine to preserve its security interests. In this regard, Hawley has written a letter to the Department of Foreign Affairs criticising the arms support provided to Ukraine. The US senators have blamed the US for ignoring Asia’s interests by giving Ukraine weapons on a large scale.

The US has provided more than $20 billion in defence aid to Ukraine over the past year. It also includes missiles, helicopters, guns, rocket systems, radars and systems related to electronic warfare. Besides, the US has provided this assistance to Ukraine from its current weapons stockpile. Therefore, analysts and former officials have been criticising the reduction of the necessary weapons in the defence forces of the United States. Against this backdrop, Hawley’s direct letter to the Department of Foreign Affairs to raise the issue becomes attention-grabbing.

A letter written by Senator Hawley demands to give Taiwan priority. The US senator has said that if there was an arms request from both Taiwan and Ukraine, it should meet Taiwan’s demand first. Hawley pointed out that if China attacks Taiwan, it may become difficult to supply arms to Taiwan in future. In the letter, he has also made aware that Taiwan is very important to US’s security interests in Asia.

After President Joe Biden took office, it came to light that the speed of the US arms supply to Taiwan had slowed down. The Taiwanese government also openly raised the issue, complaining that Taiwan had yet to receive many US-sanctioned weapons. However, the Biden administration has adopted a China-backed stance by widely ignoring it and has avoided providing necessary and advanced weapons to Taiwan.
