The Al Qaeda and IS bases have become active in this sector, known as Sahel and these terrorist organisations are consistently targeting the military. Over the last one year, military bases in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Nigeria have been targeted. Chad, along with these countries have formed the combined force G5-Sahel Force. The terrorists are attacking the bases of this joint force.

73 soldiers killed in dreadful terror attack in NigerOn Tuesday night, a major attack was carried out by the terrorists, on the military base at Inates, in Niger. As per the military sources there were hundreds of terrorists involved in the attack. Vehicles filled with rockets and explosive were used in the attack. The local military claimed that this was the first time that the terrorists used weapons on such a large scale.

More than 70 soldiers were killed in the attack and 12 soldiers were seriously injured. At the same time, more than 30 soldiers are missing and as per sources an independent search operation has been lunched. There was a retaliation against the terrorist attack and some of the terrorists are claimed to have been killed, but the report could not be confirmed. Following the attack in Niger, President Issoufou cancelled his Egypt visit.

This is the second terror attack on a military base in Niger, in the last seven months. In the month of May, 28 soldiers were killed in the attack on the military base in Tongo Tongo area. This attack too, was carried out on a military base near the Mali border. In the month of November, 24 soldiers were killed in the terror attack on a military unit near the Mali-Niger border in the Gao province.

The repeated terrorist attacks only indicate that the influence of the terrorist organisations is increasing in western Africa. The French government has built a special force of four thousand soldiers with cooperation from the European countries, for this western African region known as ‘Sahel’. This force planned counter terrorist activities. But the repeated attacks show that these activities have not been very successful.
