In its spate of overturning the Trump administration’s decisions, the Biden administration had indicted removing the Houthi rebels from the list. At the same time, the Biden administration announced a review of the military assistance provided to Saudi. Since the beginning of the month, the Houthi rebels have gained confidence, given these Biden administration decisions, have intensified their attacks in Yemen. It is claimed that hundreds of Yemen soldiers were killed in these attacks. A strong reaction was expected from the United States regarding the Houthi attacks. But President Biden said that there is a need to end the conflict in Yemen and announced the removal of the Houthi rebels from the list of terrorist organisations. Biden clarified that with this move the doors for international cooperation have been opened to Yemen.

But within hours of the Biden announcement Houthis launched attacks on the Hadramaut and Shabba Wa provinces, which are under President Saleh’s control. Houthi rebels captured the city of Marib, located just 75 kilometres from the capital, Sana. While reacting to this, the Biden administration appealed to the Houthis to stop the conflict. Whereas, to counter the Houthi movements, Saudi and its Arab allies have intensified Yemen’s military activities. Military vehicles from Saudi have reached the city of Marib to regain control over the city. Simultaneously, reports are being received that Saudi fighter jets are preparing to launch airstrikes on Houthis. The possibility of a conflict flaring up in Yemen has increased considerably.

Meanwhile, after removing the Houthi rebels from the list of terrorist organisations, the Biden administration in the United States has secretly started talks with this organisation. Tim Lenderking, the special US envoy for Yemen, gave this information. Lenderking said that President Biden’s message is being reached to the Houthi rebels through a different route.
