Russian army chief meets Kurdish leader amid Turkey’s attacks in Syria 

Beirut: Any time now, the Turkish army can invade and attack the Kurds in the northern part of Syria. The President of Turkey has warned that no one can stop Turkey from conducting actions in Syria. Subsequently, senior Russian army officer in Syria met the Kurdish leader to discuss possible ways to prevent Turkish attacks. The meeting of Russian military officer with the Kurdish leader is claimed to have upset Turkey.

Kurdish leaderTurkey’s attacks in Syria seemed to have created a rift between Russia and Turkey. The brewing tension has developed due to the proposal offered by Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to Turkey related to attacks in Syria. Two days ago, Peskov had appealed to Turkey to stop attacks in Syria and to resolve differences by way of dialogue, as Russia and Turkey have good relations.  

But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is adamant about action in Syria and prepared its army for operation in Syria. Ibrahim Kalin, a spokesperson of President Erdogan, has warned that according to Turkish time, if found necessary, Turkey could enter Syria tomorrow. At the same time, Kalin told the Russian news agency that there had been a discussion with Russia regarding Turkey’s action in Syria.  

Kurdish leaderIn such a situation, the senior commander of the Russian army based in Syria, Lieutenant General Aleksandr Chaiko, met Mazloum Abdi, the senior commander of the Kurdish organization in Syria, on Sunday. According to a Lebanon-based news channel, the officials discussed the possible ways to prevent Turkey’s attacks in Syria. The news channel reported that Lieutenant General Chaiko suggested deploying the Syrian Army on the 30-kilometre border between Syria and Turkey. The Kurds are criticizing the Biden administration for not taking action against Turkey, a NATO member, and stopping the attacks on the Kurds. Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi said that although the US has reassured the Kurds, it is not enough to stop Turkish attacks. Moreover, Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi has demanded that the United States take a very tough stance and warn Turkey to stop attacks in Syria.  

Meanwhile, the Kurds blamed the United States for failing to stop Turkish attacks last week. Also, the Kurds announced that they would withdraw from the anti-IS operation in Syria till the Turkish attacks continue. The repercussions of this are being felt in the United States, and the Biden administration is being criticized. US senators and media remind us that the Kurds have greatly supported the US army in the struggle against the terrorist organization IS in Syria. 11 thousand Kurds were killed in this conflict. At the same time, the US media is warning that if the United States does not respond to the Kurdish call, Russia will take advantage of this and establish closer cooperation with the Kurds.
