Turkey and Russia should immediately stop their interference in Libya, appeals US in the UN

United Nations: – The United States appealed that the military interference of Turkey, Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) should be immediately stopped in the long-standing Libyan civil war. The United States accused, during a meeting of the United Nations, that the military assistance provided by these countries is resulting in frequent violation of the ceasefire in Libya. Meanwhile, UAE has declared support to the United States to stop the conflict in Libya. Russia and Turkey have refused to comment on the subject.

In 2011, during the Arab Spring movement, armed extremist groups overthrew the Muammar Gaddafi regime. The Libyan military had assisted these armed extremist groups at that time. Later, the United Nations recognised the government formed by these extremist groups. After that, the tension was created between the government formed by these extremist groups and one faction of the Libyan military.

General Khalifa Haftar, from the Libyan military, declared a rebellion against the government formed by the extremist groups, and a civil war is raging in Libya since the last two and a half years. Turkey is standing behind the extremist government, whereas Russia and UAE are secretly supporting the rebels led by General Haftar. It is claimed that the Libyan civil war has claimed 2,500 lives till date. The international human rights organisations claim that the number of casualties in the Libyan civil war is far greater.

Human rights organisations are claiming that the assistance received in the form of arms smuggling, despite the ceasefire, by the rival groups from Turkey, Russia and UAE is responsible for ceasefire violations. It has also been exposed that Turkey, who is supplying arms to the Libyan government, has deployed terrorists from Syria into Libya. Whereas, reports have also been published that Russian mercenaries are helping the Haftar rebels. Against this background, US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Mills, has appealed to stop interference in Libya by clearly mentioning Russia, Turkey and UAE.

UAE has responded to the US appeal. UAE Ambassador to the United Nations, Lana Nusseibeh, said that UAE is willing to cooperate with the United States and the United Nations to stop the violence in Libya. At the same time, Lana said that UAE would help prevent the interference of other countries in Libya.

Meanwhile, the Sarraj government is in control of capital Tripoli, along with the western part of Libya. Whereas, the Haftar rebels are controlling the eastern part of the country.
