The Russian defence ministry informed that Zircon hypersonic missile was test-launched from Severodvinsk nuclear submarine in the White Sea marine region. The test launch was carried out at a depth of 40 metres. The defence ministry statement said that the missile hit the target in the Barents Sea with precision. This is the first test of Zircon from a submarine.

Russia revealed for the first time, in 2016, that it was developing a Zircon hypersonic missile. Three tests of the missile have been conducted over the past year. Zircon was test-launched three months ago, in July, from a Russian destroyer. The missile has a range of one thousand kilometres and is said to have the capability to reach Mach 9 speed. Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that no missile defence system can detect this missile because of this speed.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Zircon is said to be capable of intercepting destroyers and aircraft carriers. After the test in July, the Russian defence forces also agreed to deploy these hypersonic missiles on warships. There are indications that Zircon will also be deployed on Russian submarines after this test from the submarine. Two years ago, Russia deployed a hypersonic missile, the Avangard, in its defence forces.

NATO countries, including the United States, have expressed concern over Russia’s growing hypersonic missile capabilities and warned that these missiles could threaten Western systems.
