Russia fulfils India’s weapon requirement

New Delhi: – As per reports, Russia, the traditional Indian ally, made a timely supply of necessary weapons to India, as the tension reigns with China on the Ladakh border. There is no formal announcement from both the countries on this issue. But despite a fear of a Chinese backlash, Russia seems to have attached the highest priority to its relations with India, by taking this decision to supply arms.

Defence Minister Raj Nath Singh had made an important visit to Russia- at the time when the tension had been heightened with China in the Galwan Valley. The Indian Defence Minister, during this visit to Russia to participate in the Russian Victory Day celebrations, had met the Russian Defence Minister. During this meeting, Defence Minister Raj Nath Singh had handed over the list of necessary weapons and had demanded an expeditious supply. A news agency claimed that these included Guns, Rockets and Bombs among other weapons.

The news agency reported that Russia, the traditional ally of India, has fulfilled the Indian requirements. Both the countries have not given any clarification in the issue. But in the last few months, the India-Russia cooperation has gained momentum. India has made preparations to buy 21 MiG 29 fighter jets from Russia and discussions regarding modernisation of the existing 59 MiG 29 fighter jets, in the fleet of Indian Air Force, also have been reportedly completed. It is claimed that this purchase is being made against the background of the increasing role of the MiG 29 fighter jets, in the Naval fleet. Moreover, an agreement for purchase of 12 Sukhoii-30MKI fighter jets is also expected to be signed between the two countries.

India has also demanded to reduce the delivery period of the S-400 Triumph, the ultramodern Air Defence System. Discussions are also underway to upgrade the BrahMos missile, the most lethal supersonic missile in the world, developed jointly by the two countries, to the ultramodern state. BrahMos will be developed to target the enemy warplanes equipped with the ‘Airborne Warning and Control System’ (AWACS). In the next few days, Russian President Vladimir Putin will be coming on a visit to India. There is a dense possibility that some important defence-related agreements will be signed between India and Russia, during this visit of the Russian President.
