Since the last few years, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dramatically accelerated the modernisation of the Russian armed forces. The Russian Defence Ministry is consistently testing newer technologies, systems and weapons. These include lasers, electromagnetic technology, hypersonic missiles along with drones. In the last eight months, Russia has announced testing swarm drones as well as self-destructing drones.

During joint tests, Russia's new stealth Okhotnik drone flies alongside fighter jet Su-57The testing of the S-70 Okhotnik drone, capable of a missile attack and equipped with stealth technology has added to the list. This drone is believed to be manufactured on the lines of the US Sentinel Drone, tested a few years ago. The highlight of the stealth drone is the ‘fully automated mode’. Russia claims that the drone can operate without any external monitoring because of this technology.

Russia has developed the technology to enable the new drone to operate in sync with advanced fighter jets. The feature is said to have been incorporated given rising use of drones in coordination with fighter jets in the near future. The Su-57 is Russia’s Fifth Generation Fighter Jet and the process for its induction, in the defence forces, has already commenced. Therefore, this combined testing of the new drone and fighter jet assumes much significance.

The new test indicates that Russia may use coordinated drones and fighter jets in the future air campaigns. The Russian defence forces informed that the flight of the S-70 Okhotnik drone and Su-57 lasted for nearly 30 minutes. The flight period is considered to be critical, considering the time taken for air operations.
