Right-wing coalition wins majority in Italy – Giorgia Meloni to become country’s first female Prime Minister

Rome: The right-wing Centrodestra has won a majority in the parliamentary elections held in Italy on Sunday. The party ‘Brothers of Italy’, which leads this alliance, has received 26% of the votes, and the head of the party, Giorgia Meloni, will take over as the Prime Minister. She will be the first female Prime Minister in the history of Italy. The right-wing leaders in Hungary, Poland, France, Germany and Spain welcome the success of the right-wing coalition in Italy. However, there have been mixed reactions in the European Union, and analysts have claimed that the success of the right wing in Italy will fuel the differences in the Union. In February last year, Mario Draghi took over as the Prime Minister of Italy. Draghi, who served as Prime Minister with the support of soft and left-wing parties, resigned from the post in July. He had to resign after the Five Star Movement party withdrew its support over the issue of funding. Despite an appeal from President Sergio Mattarella, Draghi remained firm on his decision to resign and announced elections.

Right-wing coalition wins majority in Italy - Giorgia Meloni to become country's first female Prime MinisterVoting for the elections in Italy took place on Sunday, September 25. The results are out, and the Centrodestra formed under the ‘Brothers of Italy‘ leadership has received 44% of the votes. Accordingly, more than 225 of Italy’s 400 Lower House seats have gone to the alliance. Besides, Centrodestra will hold more than 110 out of 200 seats in the Upper House. This is the first time since World War II that a right-wing coalition has won such a majority in Italy.

The Centrodestra alliance includes Giorgia Meloni’s ‘Brothers of Italy’ party, former internal security minister Matteo Salvini’s ‘The League’ and former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s ‘Forza Italia’. Both these parties have got 17% votes. The success of Meloni’s ‘Brothers of Italy’ party is considered historic. The party, formed in 2012, had only four per cent of the votes in the last election. However, the party’s jump to 26% signals the Italian people’s changing mentality. Meloni’s election to the post of Prime Minister also confirms this.

Meloni, who campaigned under the slogan ‘God, Country and Family’, has vehemently opposed Italy’s growing refugee crisis, EU intervention and hypocritical leftist ideology. Therefore, it is predicted that there will be strong clashes between Italy and the liberal EU in the future.
