Unknown assailants fired indiscriminately at Arif, while he was standing outside his home. The assailants escaped after carrying out the attack. The people present moved Arif to a hospital immediately. But he died during treatment. Arif, one of the important leaders of the PTM, had visited Afghanistan a few days ago. During this visit, he had strongly criticised the anti-citizen policies of the Pakistan government.

Repercussions of Arif’s speech were felt in Pakistan and Pakistani agencies arrested Arif on 17th of April. Talk is rife that the Pakistan military got him eliminated, after that. PTM leader and member of the Pakistan parliament, Mohsin Dawar accused that Pakistan government-sponsored Taliban was behind the attack.

The political-military administration in Pakistan has perpetually meted out injustice and showered atrocities on the Pashtun people. In recent times, young Pashtun leaders had raised their voices against this. The response to the PTM increased manifold due to the aggressive leadership of the young leader Manzoor Pashteen. PTM rallies started getting an attendance in millions and the jolts of this support were felt even in Islamabad. Thereafter, the Pakistan military and the intelligence agency ISI, have started targeting the Pashtun leaders.

It has been accused that Pakistan has carried of killings of other members of Arif’s family, too. According to the Pakistani military system, opposition for terrorism and demand of rights for the Pashtun people is an offence. Therefore, the Pakistani military and ISI are targeting the Pashtun leaders in different ways.
