Washington: While the Congress was in session to endorse the election of the new President of the United States, thousands of Trump supporters stormed it. There was pandemonium as the protestors breached the security cordon and other barricades to enter the house directly. Four protestors were killed, while 14 policemen were injured in the intense fight between the Trump supporters and the security agencies. As the protestors directly entered the house, the session was suspended and the Congressmen moved to a safe place with National Guard’s help. This is the second attack on the Congress building. Earlier, British soldiers had set the house on fire in 1814.

But incumbent President Donald Trump, accused of malpractices in the election and challenged Biden’s victory. Thousands of Trump supporters had gathered for the rally. During the rally, President Trump reiterated that he was the real winner and said that the others had deprived the US population of their victory. After speeches of other leaders along with Trump, the protestors proceeded towards the Congress. The protestors reached the building housing the Congress at around two in the afternoon. Police tried stopping these protestors from going near the building.

The Trump supporters broke closed doors and windows and used ladders to enter the building. The security personnel tried stopping these people from entering the building. One of the Trump supporters was shot at by a security person while trying to enter through a window. It was reported that the woman died later. In all, four persons were killed in action taken by the security forces.

The Congress session was suspended at 3 pm. The National Guard soldiers who came into the house moved the Congressmen to a safe place. The protestors vandalised the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and the main hall. During the entire sequence of events, 14 policemen were injured. The police seized a large number of weapons including handguns and pipe bombs. More than 50 protestors have been arrested for trespassing into the House. Following the incident, Mayor of Washington announced that curfew was being imposed in the city, for 15 days. Washington police have termed the incident as unfortunate and have orders for a thorough investigation into the matter, have been issued. Reactions on the media, social media and political circles denounced this violence in the Congress building, as an act of major embarrassment and defamation for the entire United States.
