Muqtada al-Sadr’s political party won the most seats in Iraq’s general election. However, pro-Iran groups, influential in Iraqi politics, prevented Sadr from establishing power. Angered by this, Sadr’s supporters stormed Iraq’s parliament last week. But following the appeals made by al-Sadr and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, protesters vacated the parliament. But on Saturday, pro-Sadr protesters stormed the Iraqi parliament once again.

The Sadr party’s main demand is that pro-American or pro-Iranian parties and leaders should not have a place in Iraq’s politics. At the same time, Sadr’s supporters have suggested taking action against all terrorist organizations in Iraq without any discrimination. Sadr’s supporters say they will not withdraw unless their demands are accepted. But pro-Iranian groups in Iraq have also announced plans to take to the streets in Baghdad to protest against Sadr’s supporters.

The pro-Iran group appealed to the people of Iraq to participate in their demonstration. The pro-Iranian terrorist organization Popular Mobilization Forces is also expected to participate in these demonstrations. Taking note of this, Muqtada al-Sadr has also instructed his supporters to hold demonstrations against pro-Iranian groups in all five provinces of Iraq and not be confined to the capital, Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Middle Eastern media are claiming that the aggression of these two groups may ignite a conflict in Iraq. According to some analysts in Iraq, the possibility of this conflict turning into civil war cannot be ruled out. Although Prime Minister Kadhimi has deployed the army, both factions pitted against each other are considered influential in Iraq. Therefore, if a civil war breaks out in Iraq, it can also affect the borders of Iran, Turkey and Kuwait. If this happens, there are concerns that fuel supplies in the region could be disrupted and could add to the global fuel crisis.
