About a month ago, a German citizen was stabbed and killed in Chemnitz city of Saxony state, Germany. It turned out that an Iraqi and Syrian migrant had committed this crime. Realising the involvement of migrants, a huge wave of dissent erupted in city of Chemnitz. The Right-wing and Nationalist groups organised protests and demonstration across the city to provide a channel for citizens to express their dissent. To counter this, the left-wing groups and supporters of migrants organised their rallies.

Multiple protests by both the groups, lead to immense tensions in Chemnitz, causing the local administration to declare an emergency. After the stabbing of the German citizen, media had reported the right-wing groups to likely  target the migrants. This had caused a huge political clash in Germany.

Horst Seehofer, Germany Minister in charge of internal security announced his support to the protest lead by citizens and further stated that had he  not  been a minister, as a citizen, he would have participated in the demonstration. Drawing attention to  the issue of  the migrants, he said, “I can understand the reasons for large scale dissent, over stabbing and murder of one person.” He targeted Angela Merkel by pointing out that the large scale of migrants in Germanyis  the sole reason for all such  problems.

On the contrary, Chancellor Angela Merkel has held ‘Alternative For Germany’ (AfD), a right-wing political party to be responsible for incidents in Chemnitz. She accused the AfD of fuelling tensions in Chemnitz. However, it seems that the German citizens do not seem to agree with Angela Merkel, which has also reflected in a recent survey, wherein, 69% have agreed to the failure of the immigrant policy and integration.
