While leaving for this tour, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of the West Asian Tour. By saying that there are more than 9 million Indians working in the Gulf countries, the Prime Minister clarified that India has very close ties with this region. From Jordan, the Prime Minister will proceed to Palestine and he will become the first Indian Prime Minister to pay a visit there. A few days ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited India and Prime Minister Modi had visited Israel last year.

In view of the visits of the two leaders, it was alleged that the ties between Israel and India are becoming stronger and India has changed its traditional stand about Palestine. But, this visit by Prime Minister Modi makes it clear that at the time when the ties with Israel are becoming stronger, India has maintained the balance in its foreign policy with his Palestine visit. Palestine President Abbas has welcomed the visit by Prime Minister Modi. Abbas has said that India can play an important role in the Gulf peace process.

Abbas further said, ‘Prime Minister Modi’s visit shows that India supports peace in this region.’ Abbas also said, ‘India has always supported the Palestine cause. We are majorly dependent on the Indian support for the freedom of Palestine’. Currently, the dispute between Israel and Palestine has worsened and the discussions between the two parties has completely stopped. Since the US announced Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the bilateral talks and relations on all levels are on the verge of breaking.

Prime Minister Modi is visiting Palestine in such a situation. The media is asking whether India will use its influence to bring Israel and Palestine to the discussion table. Even if that does not happen, the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Palestine will send a big message that India has not changed its stance regarding Palestine while establishing co-operation with Israel.

Discussion between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump

Prime Minister Modi and United States President Trump had a telephonic discussion on Friday. They discussed about the Maldives political crisis, Rohingya refugees and the situation in Afghanistan. They also discussed the issue of security and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, informed the White House.

Maldives is in the middle of a political crisis and there are demands from the country that India should intervene to resolve the crisis. But, China has opposed any possible intervention by India. In view of this, the discussion between the United States President and the Indian Prime Minister seems significant.

Both the leaders accepted to resolutely take forward the policy about South Asia and provide all possible help to Afghanistan for stability and safety there, said the White House while elaborating on the discussion. Both the leaders have agreed to work in unison for stability and security of the ‘Indo-Pacific’ region, clarified the White House.
