Pakistan rejects US’ request to accept Afghan refugees

Washington – The Conflict between the Afghan army and Taliban has intensified; millions have been displaced. The United Nations has expressed concerns over the situation in Afghanistan. In such a scenario, the United States suggested that Pakistan, Afghanistan’s neighbour, keep its borders open and allow access to refugees. But Pakistan has angered the United States by saying it will not accept Afghan refugees.

It is claimed that that the United States reprimanded the Pakistani National Security Advisor. At the same time, the US State Department has suggested that Pakistan keep its borders open for refugees fleeing because of the conflict in Afghanistan.

The United States is ready to accept a limited number of refugees from Afghanistan. However, before that, the United States had suggested that Pakistan accept the refugees and send them to the United States via Turkey. Details of Pakistan’s decision at the meeting were not released. In the past, Pakistan had accepted Afghan refugees. But Moeed Yusuf, Pakistan’s national security advisor, has reportedly rejected the US suggestion.

Pakistani journalists have criticised Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has denied a military base to the United States; he does not realise the dire consequences of US resentment. Now Moeed Yusuf has also made claims that hurt the United States. The Pakistani media is worried that the repercussions will soon become apparent.
