Pakistan-Iran relations deteriorateEarlier in June, there was an IED explosion in a marketplace in Karachi, the financial capital of Pakistan. This explosion killed one and injured ten people. In response, Pakistan’s security conducted an operation in the Mauripur area, killing two suspects. Pakistani authorities accused both of being members of the Sindhudesh Republican Army-SRA, a militant group seeking an independent Sindhudesh.

Pakistan has claimed that the SRA terrorists were trained in Iran, and the SRA chief Asghar Ali was seeking asylum in Iran. In response, Iran has expelled more than a hundred Pakistani refugees. Iran has also held Pakistan responsible for terrorism in Iran.

On previous occasions, Iran has accused Pakistan of sponsoring terrorism, perpetrating terrorist attacks in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province and smuggling drugs across the border. Pakistan-Iran relations deteriorateFormer Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, during his visit to Iran in 2019, accepted that terrorists from Pakistan were carrying out massacres on the border with Iran. This ratified Iran’s claims. Prime Minister Imran Khan was widely criticised in Pakistan for this statement. Since then, Iranian military officials have warned of conducting a surgical strike if Pakistan does not act to eradicate terrorist camps on the Pakistani border. Pakistan tried to salvage and improve cooperation and relations with Iran during this time.

Iran has targeted Pakistan since it was clear that Pakistan was responsible for enabling the Taliban regime to come to power in Afghanistan. This has led to tensions between Iran and Pakistan over the past few months. According to local media, tensions have escalated after the Karachi blast.
