After retreating over the last few days, Afghan troops, led by Saleh, are entering Panjshir with tanks and military vehicles because of the Taliban attacks. Ahmed Masood, the son of Ahmed Shah Masood, head of Panjshir and former leader of the Northern Alliance, also joined Saleh in declaring an anti-Taliban struggle. Ahmed Masood has demanded that the United States should provide weapons to the Northern Alliance for the conflict.

In an article for a US newspaper, Masood wrote, ‘My father, Ahmed Shah Masood, fought against the Taliban. I am also going to follow in his footsteps. In this fight against the Taliban, the United States can show that it still supports democracy by supplying weapons to the Northern Alliance.’ It is claimed that a large front of the Northern Alliance has been formed in Panjshir, under the leadership of Saleh and Masood.

Former Afghan Vice President Rashid Khan Dostum, a staunch supporter of Mazar-e-Sharif, is also expected to enter Panjshir soon.

Dostum had fled to Uzbekistan and Atta Mohammad Noor, another gang leader after Taliban militants took control of Mazar-e-Sharif last week. This clarifies that staunch anti-Taliban leaders like Saleh, Masood, Dostum, Mohammadi, Noor are coming together in the Northern Alliance.
