Pakistan creates a facade of action against terrorism to escape from the FATF Grey List

Islamabad: Pakistan expected an announcement of its removal from the Grey List of Financial Action Task Force (FATF) during the meeting that concluded recently. Celebrations had already started in Pakistan even before the announcement. But FATF retained Pakistan in the Grey List. Pakistan has started new antics of counter-terrorism actions in an attempt to relieve itself from the Grey List. Among these is the Pakistan court punishing 15 years imprisonment to Sajid Mir, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

Rumours of Sajid Mir not being alive had been spread before this. Pakistan made such claims even on the official level. But Pakistan panicked after the western countries demanded proof. Thus, Pakistan seems to have handed out this punishment, holding him guilty of the crime.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is taking all these actions to create an illusion that it is taking strict actions against terrorists. Otherwise, Pakistan could have handed out harsher punishment to Sajid Mir for his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. But Pakistan did not make any efforts in that direction. Even now, Pakistan’s action against Sajid Mir is just given the FATF pressure.
