Houthi rebels threaten to respond to US sanctions

Sanaa – Within two days of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the Houthi rebels threatened a new conflict in the Gulf. Only two days ago, the United States imposed economic sanctions against two senior Houthi leaders. The Houthi rebels, infuriated with the US action, threatened that there would be retaliation in the form of attacks on Saudi Arabia. Houthi rebels threatened that the attacks would be carried out at locations unthinkable for the Saudi Arabian agencies.

The United States accused that the safety of the Yemenis population was threatened by the Houthi attacks and imposed sanctions against two senior commanders of the Houthi rebels leading the attacks on the Marib city. The Houthi revolutionaries criticised the US sanctions.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, the President of the rebel organisation Ansar Allah, also known as Houthi rebels, declared that the rebels would not be scared of the US sanctions. Mohammed warned on social media, ‘The actions will continue despite sanctions against our commanders and the organisation. We will launch attacks in the combative countries, at locations unimaginable for their agencies.’

Although Mohammed Ali al-Houthi has not directly mentioned it, it is claimed that the threat is directed towards Saudi Arabia. Following the threat issued by the Houthi President, the danger of attacks on important cities in Saudi Arabia like Riyadh, Jeddah, Jizan, along with the largest oil project of Aramco, has considerably increased. The Houthi rebels have launched attacks with missile, rocket and drone loaded with explosives in these locations in the past.

A few hours before issuing the threat, the Houthi rebels launched drone attacks near the Saudi Arabian border. Saudi Arabia claimed to have busted these attacks. But the Houthi President has threatened to launch attacks on unexpected locations. Therefore, it is claimed that Houthi rebels will launch attacks on areas that would rock the attacker country. There is a thick possibility that the Houthi rebels may target the oil tankers of Saudi Arabia and other western countries sailing through the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea.

The Houthi rebels can also attack the Eilat city in Israel. Iran-affiliated Houthi rebels had warned that their missiles could reach southern Israel. Whereas, reports had been received that the Israel military had activated the Patriot air defence system on the Eilat military base in January to defend against the Houthi missiles. Therefore, the threat issued by Houthi President Mohammed Ali al-Houthi is being considered seriously.

Meanwhile, since 2015, the front formed by the Arab countries who support Saudi Arabia had declared a conflict against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. More than 225,000 people have been killed in this six-year conflict, and more than 3.1 million have been displaced. 84,000 children died of starvation. If the battle for the seizure of the Marib city continues, more than 385,000 migrants housed in camps will once again be displaced.
