Nigerian rebels kidnap 140 students

Nigerian rebels,Boko Haram,kidnap students,Bethel Baptist SchoolAbuja – An armed rebel group attacked a school in the Kaduna province of Nigeria and kidnapped 140 students and teachers. It has been reported that 12 people, including three children, were abducted from a hospital in Zaria before this incident. This kidnapping of school children in the Chikun district of Kaduna province is the tenth incidence of the mass abduction of students in the last eight months. The incidence of school student kidnappings has increased after the schoolgirls’ abduction by the terrorist organisation Boko Haram in 2014.

The rebels who came in cars launched an attack on the Bethel Baptist High School in the Chikun district. The school security personnel were injured in the attack. Sources informed that the rebels took all the children from the hostel and the teachers to the jungle. On receiving information, the military started chasing the rebels and the search operations are being carried out.

Officials from the school and parents are claiming that the abduction must only be for a ransom. It is claimed that there were nearly 180 students in the school at the time of the attack. After the Monday incident, the local administration has ordered to shut the other schools in the area.

Before the abduction in Kaduna, another kidnapping incident was reported from Zaria. On Sunday, an armed group launched attacks on the police station and a hospital. After that, the rebels entered the hospital and abducted 12 people, including nurses, employees and children. Sources informed that the security agencies have started the search operations.

The schools and hostels are the main targets of the attacks and kidnapping. More than ten mass kidnapping cases have been reported in the last eight months and more than one thousand students and teachers have been abducted. More than 200 students out of these are still missing and fears are being expressed that they may have been forced to serve as Child Soldiers by the terrorist and rebel organisations.
