Netanyahu forms new Israeli government by making coalition deal with a far-right partyNetanyahu’s Likud Party and coalition parties won the election on 1st November. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has invited Netanyahu to form the government by 30th November. Netanyahu is in discussion with parties that supported him in the election campaign. Ben-Gvir, leader of the Otzma Yehudit party known for its far-right views, announced that they would join Netanyahu’s Likud party to form the government.

However, Ben-Gvir refrained from commenting about which ministerial position he would get in Israel’s next government. The Likud party has also not made any announcement in this regard. But the international media has already reported that Ben-Gvir will be given the post of police minister or National Security Minister. The media claims that Netanyahu had given such an indication during the election campaign. Western media are claiming that with this, Ben-Gvir will also oversee the Border Police in the West Bank with Israel.

Ben-Gvir is known as a bitter anti-Palestinian leader and opposed to bi-nationalism. He had previously demanded that Jews be allowed to pray at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Therefore, the media say that his selection for this post may be controversial and it will have international repercussions. Nevertheless, it is claimed that Netanyahu may have decided to include Ben-Gvir in the government, given the increasing attacks on Israeli soldiers in the West Bank and the ongoing crackdown on Palestinians. Meanwhile, there were reports that the US is pressuring Netanyahu not to give ministerial positions to Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.
