Oil India Ltd discovers natural gas deposits in Assam’s Tinsukia

New Delhi: Oil India Limited (OIL) has found large Natural Gas deposits in the Tinsukia district of Assam. The gas deposits were discovered while excavation work was being carried out in the Dinjan-1 well. OIL announced that as per preliminary reports, 1,25,000 cubic metres of Natural Gas will be available per day from the well.

The Natural Gas deposits are found only in this region of India. The government is making efforts to reduce dependence on oil and to promote the use of Natural Gas. Accordingly, the research and exploration of gas deposits has been expedited.

Natural Gas deposits found by OIL in Tinsukia, AssamSand mixed with hydrocarbons was found in the Dinjan-1 well in the Tinsukia Petroleum Mining Lease (TPML) region. Following the inspection of the area, a large hydrocarbon gas deposit was found there. After testing, it was noted that excavation of 1,25,000 cubic metres of Natural Gas was possible at this place. Following the discovery of Natural Gas in Tinsukia, new sectors will open in Assam for oil and gas exploration. With the discovery of Natural Gas in Tinsukia, the possibility of finding more gas reserves in the nearby region has increased.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that Assam would be promoted as the Oil and Natural Gas Centre of the country. 15% of the Natural Gas found in the country comes from Assam. ONGC is making efforts to dig more wells for Natural Gas exploration. Only last year, ONGC announced an investment of Rs 130 billion in Assam.
