The meeting to be held on 26th and 27th June has gained paramount diplomatic, strategic and economic importance. The issue of the Ukraine war will be on the anvil during the meeting. India maintained its relations with Russia even while the war is being fought in Ukraine, defying all the pressure exerted by the western countries. Therefore, there were talks that India would not be invited for the G7 meeting.

But German Chancellor Scholtz called Prime Minister Modi and invited him for the meeting. Despite this, there is a strong possibility that fresh efforts will be made to pressurise India regarding cooperation with Russia. The United States initiated this a few days ago by expressing displeasure over the Indian cooperation with Russia. But this would hardly have any effect on the Indian policies. India firmly believes that the Ukraine issue must only be resolved through political dialogue. Prime Minister Modi will present this Indian stand more emphatically at the G7 meeting.
