Israeli action in the West Bank of Palestine mounts tension

Jerusalem: On Tuesday, the Israeli army took action against the armed organisation of Fatah, the political party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of the West Bank. Three people were killed. The Israeli army informed that 40 people were injured in the clash with the extremists. The Biden administration is trying to restart peace talks between Israel and Abbas’s Fatah party. In such a scenario, the Israeli military’s actions in the West Bank could be a source of fresh tension. The Israeli army surrounded the house of ‘Ibrahim al-Nablusi’ in the West Bank city of Nablus on Tuesday morning. Ibrahim is a senior commander of the armed extremist organisation Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade is the armed wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s ruling Fatah party in the West Bank. Israeli security agencies said Ibrahim was on the ‘wanted’ list.

A few months ago, Ibrahim attacked the Israeli security forces. Information is also surfacing that this included a rocket attack on an Israeli army post. Israeli security forces had issued a warrant for Ibrahim’s arrest. But for the past few months, Ibrahim had been absconding. In February and July, Israeli security agencies had received information that Ibrahim attended events in the West Bank.

After that, information was received that Ibrahim was hiding in his residence in Nablus. Accordingly, on Tuesday, the Israeli army surrounded Ibrahim’s house and asked him to surrender. But after Ibrahim opened fire, the soldiers retaliated. The Israeli army informed that Ibrahim and his two companions were killed. This time the Israeli army used a rocket launcher.

Information is being received that 40 people were injured due to the collapse of a part of the building following the attack. The US Biden administration is trying to restart the peace talks between Israel and Palestine that have been stalled for more than four years. President Biden announced during his visit to the West Bank last month. Before that, there were reports that Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz had also met Mahmoud Abbas. But Tuesday’s action appears to have dashed the prospect of peace talks between Israel and Palestine.

Meanwhile, Israeli leaders, security agencies and military analysts are expressing concerns that extremists in the West Bank are posing a threat to Israeli security. Demonstrations against Israel in support of PIJ were held in the West Bank city of Jenin, while PIJ terrorists have been launching rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza for the past three days. A few days ago, it was revealed that links to various attacks on the Israeli security forces were in the West Bank. Israeli analysts are pointing out that the influence of terrorist organisations Hamas, PIJ and IS from the Gaza Strip is increasing in the West Bank.
