Iran has tripled its capacity to enrich uranium – IAEA Chief warns

Tehran/ Vienna: Iran informed us they were tripling, not doubling, tripling their capacity to enrich uranium at 60%, which is very close to the military level, which is 90%. This is not banal. This is something that has consequences. It gives them an inventory of nuclear material for which it cannot be excluded that there might be another use, warned Rafael Grossi, IAEA Chief. Within 24 hours of this warning, Iran announced a new nuclear project.

Iran has tripled its capacity to enrich uranium – IAEA Chief warnsAccording to the famous nuclear agreement signed by the US with Iran in 2015, enrichment of uranium is permitted up to 3.67%. It agreed to ease sanctions on Iran and provide additional aid if this limit was met. At the same time, it was suggested that Fordow and other nuclear projects in Iran would only be used for research on uranium. But for the past few months, Israel and the International Atomic Energy Agency have accused Iran of openly violating the terms of the nuclear agreement.

Last month, Iran began enriching uranium with IR-6 at its underground nuclear plant at Fordow. Besides, the agency had criticised Iran for yet another violation of the nuclear deal. Britain, France and Germany released a joint statement criticising Iran’s nuclear activities. But the controversy over the nuclear program was largely ignored by the protests against the regime in Iran. During this period, Iran gave important information to the agency about its nuclear program.

Grossi claimed that increasing uranium enrichment capacity brought Iran closer to the materials needed to build a nuclear bomb. Also, Grossi demanded that Iran should be allowed to inspect nuclear projects. Grossi warned Western countries that this progress in Iran’s nuclear program is a matter of concern and that serious consequences are possible and called for action against Iran.

There has been no major reaction from the United States or European countries. But Russia has demanded the lifting of sanctions on Iran. At the same time, Iran announced that it had started constructing a new nuclear project in the Khuzestan province. Iran claimed it would take eight years to complete the $2 billion nuclear project. At the same time, Iran warned that although the US is putting pressure on Iran to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran will not bow to it.
