Indian Navy to be equipped with ‘Mareech’ ATDS

New Delhi: ‘Mareech,’ the Advanced Torpedo Defence System (ATDS) has been included in the Indian naval ships and submarines, to locate and destroy the torpedoes fired at them.  This system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will prove vital for the Indian Navy. The inclusion of Mareech, in the Indian Navy, when the activities of the Chinese submarines are on the rise in the Indian Ocean, is entirely relevant.  Mareech ATDS is an entirely indigenous system developed by Indian Navy and DRDO in collaboration. DRDO has been working on the development of the Mareech ATDS since 2016, given the increasing threat to Indian warships. The system was completed a year ago and Mareech was being tested on the naval destroyers and marine platforms, since the last few months. The Navy announced that Mareech ATDS satisfied all the prescribed criteria of the Indian Navy.

The Navy claimed that the addition of Mareech, developed under the Make in India campaign, has greatly augmented the strength of the Indian Navy. Bharat Electronics Limited has been awarded the contract for manufacturing the Mareech ATDS. Every destroyer in the Indian Navy will be equipped with Mareech ATDS and this will increase the anti-submarine capabilities of the Indian Navy. The deployment of the Mareech ATDS becomes important against the background of increasing activities of the Chinese submarines in the Bay of Bengal.

In the beginning of this month, the Indian Navy published information regarding the increasing activities of Chinese warships and submarines, in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy has taken note of increasing movements of Chinese submarines, from the Strait of Malacca to the Gulf of Aden. The Indian Navy noted that Chinese submarines equipped with conventional missiles, as well as those equipped with nuclear warheads, were deployed in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy cautioned that China is trying to warn India by deploying submarines with nuclear warheads.

Moreover, 3,400 flights of Chinese marine drones have been noted, in the Indian Ocean, between the months of December 2019 to May 2020. China has said that these flights of Chinese marine drones were for surveying the Sea bed. But the Indian Navy has already warned that these Chinese activities in the Indian Ocean region are a threat to the Indian security. Against this background, the deployment of Mareech ATDS, in the Indian Navy, becomes a warning bell for China.
