India in touch with other countries for membership of ‘Nuclear Suppliers Group’

New Delhi – India is seeking membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), an international group that controls the supply of components for the nuclear program. Minister of State for External Affairs, V. Muraleedharan, told the Parliament that India was in touch with other NSG member states on the issue. The Minister of State for External Affairs also said that the United States has openly supported India.

India has been trying to obtain membership in this group for the last few years. Many countries, including the United States, Russia and France, have supported India’s membership in the NSG. However, China is consistently creating obstacles in the membership process for India.

China has repeatedly accused India of not signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. China’s opposition to the Indian membership is a problem as the new members of the NSG have to be elected unanimously. However, the Minister of State for External Affairs said in response to a question that India was in talks with other member countries to join the NSG. India is also seeking permanent membership in the UN Security Council and the NSG, with the support of many countries, including the United States, Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan said.
