India and Myanmar sign ten cooperation agreementsIndia has drawn up a policy to strengthen ties with the neighbouring Asian countries. As a part of this policy, India has established cooperation with its longstanding ally, Myanmar, since the last few years. Senior Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi visited India as part of this cooperation. Last week, Indian Naval Chief Karambir Singh visited Myanmar. Before that, India supplied essential commodities to its neighbour. These supplies were made against the background of the socio-economic cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in 2017.

Now, the Myanmar President has come on a four-day visit as the next and essential stage of the cooperation. Ten agreements were signed between the two countries at the very beginning of the tour. The deals include human trafficking, assistance to stop timber smuggling, safeguarding wildlife and transport and communication systems. Sources informed that an exclusive agreement ‘Quick Impact Projects’ (QIP) also was signed. Leaders from both countries claimed that this agreement would further strengthen the relations between the two countries.

Information is being received that the Myanmar President held discussions with the Indian Prime Minister on many other topics over and above the agreements, but the details have not been published. Possibility of discussions between the two leaders regarding the management of terrorists challenging the security of north-eastern India cannot be denied.
