Impose sanctions against countries recognising the Taliban regime, proposal by US Senators

Washington: – Leading US senators introduced a resolution in Congress demanding, ‘Declare the Taliban a terrorist organisation and include them in the terrorist governments’ list of the United Nations. At the same time, impose sanctions against countries that recognise the Taliban’s terrorist regime.’ If the resolution is passed, Pakistan, which advocates for the Taliban, could face stern action. Two days ago, the European Union had lashed out at Pakistan, providing military assistance to the Taliban.

Senior US Senators Marco Rubio, Tommy Tuberville, Moore Capito, Dan Sullivan, Thom Tillis and Cynthia Lummis moved important resolutions in the US Congress on Thursday. The senators said the Taliban regime in Afghanistan was illegal under the Preventing Recognition of Terrorist States Act. The US senators noted that the names featuring in the Terror Lists of the United States and the United Nations were part of the Taliban government.

Fourteen of the 36 members of the government, announced by the Taliban ten days ago, are on the UN list of terrorists. The US senators also recalled that Sirajuddin Haqqani and Khalil Haqqani, who are on the FBI’s most-wanted list, were ministers in the Taliban government. The senators also demanded that the Taliban, which has included these terrorists in the government, be declared a terrorist organisation.

The resolution called on the United States to impose stricter sanctions on countries that recognise the Taliban regime and those who cooperate with it. The resolution is expected to be approved by the US Congress. It is claimed that the Taliban government could also face action, being a government involved in drug trafficking. At the same time, tough sanctions could be imposed on Pakistan, struggling to get the international community to recognise the Taliban regime.

It has been accused that Pakistan, which has been receiving financial benefits and military aid from the United States, has been nurturing the Taliban and the other terrorist groups for the past 20 years. Secretary of State Blinken was asked about this during a hearing in the US Senate. Two days ago, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave a strong signal that the US was reconsidering its relations with Pakistan. After this, panic spread in Pakistan. In such a scenario, the new demand of the US senators will rock the foundation of Pakistan.
