Germany to redeploy troops in BosniaIn the last decade, the European Republic of Yugoslavia disintegrated after violent clashes which killed about 100 thousand people. Seven nations were formed out of this conflict: Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Kosovo. These countries are along the Balkan Mountains and are thus referred to as the Balkan countries.

There have been tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina since independence in the 1990s over ethnic clashes between Bosnian, Serbs, and Croat origins. A few months back, there was a demand for the province of Sparska to be declared an independent country.

Analysts in Europe had earlier warned that war could break out again if Bosnian separatists gained strength. Initially, NATO had deployed troops to maintain order in the country, which was disturbed by ethnic violence. Later in 2004, the European Union launched a peacekeeping operation in Bosnia, which included the deployment of the German army. But in 2012, Germany withdrew its troops from Bosnia.

Germany to redeploy troops in BosniaDue to the recent Ukraine-Russia conflict, Germany has announced to deploy its 50 troops in Bosnia over concern about stability in the region. Although it’s a relatively small deployment, it sends a message that Germany is vigilant about the situation in Bosnia. Additionally, Germany wants to show that if instability in Bosnia arises, which affects the interest of Germany, then it would not hesitate to deploy military forces. Therefore, deploying 50 troops seemed to be a cautious strategy for Germany.

The German government has said that the deployment in Bosnia will be for one year. Germany claims that stability in Bosnia is crucial for their country.
