Germany to assist Poland to stop migrant influx from Belarus

Berlin/Warsaw/Minsk: – Germany indicated that it would support Poland in countering the influx of migrants from Belarus into the European Union. The proposal includes joint patrols on the German-Polish border, additional troops for the Polish border, and financial assistance to provide facilities to the migrants. In the last two months, it has been reported that refugees from Belarus entering Poland are now also arriving in Germany. This seemingly is the reason why Germany has offered to cooperate.

The European Union (EU) has imposed sanctions on Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus’ supremo. Some European countries provided asylum to the leaders opposed to Lukashenko and efforts are being made to pressurise Belarus. Belarus has begun using migrants to retaliate against the Union’s action. Poland has claimed that more than 8,000 refugees have tried to infiltrate Belarus in the past two months.

Poland has already begun constructing fences along the border to prevent illegal immigration and has also deployed troops. Last month, the Polish government declared a state of emergency in Podlaski and Lubelski. Despite these measures, the influx of migrants has not been completely controlled. On the contrary, migrants arriving in Poland are now entering countries like Germany. According to German agencies, about 4,500 Belarusian migrants infiltrated in August and September.

As this number continues to grow, Germany is now taking steps to prevent this influx. Under it, Germany’s internal security department has sent a proposal of assistance to Poland. The proposal appeals for joint patrols along the German-Polish border. At the same time, there are indications that Germany will send army units to the Poland-Belarus border. The German Interior Ministry has also said in the proposal that Germany will help build facilities for migrants entering Poland from Belarus.

With Russia’s help, Belarus is pushing migrants into European borders; Poland and Lithuania have accused that this is a part of ‘hybrid warfare’. The Union has taken serious cognisance of these allegations and has assured full cooperation to the countries concerned. However, Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has dismissed all the allegations on the migrant issue.
