Since the last three months, strong protests are being conducted in Hong Kong, against the pro-Chinese administration and the Chinese government. The discontent in the people of Hong Kong against the oppression by the communist Chinese government, since the last two decades, is being vented. The bill presented by the local administration became the triggering factor, and the oppression of the democratic values by the Chinese government has been exposed.

The pro-Chinese administration has failed to control the agitation, going on for the last three months. Therefore, the possibility of Chinese interference has become stronger. Moreover, this has become a cause for concern, at the international level. The United States, the United Kingdom, along with European countries and Canada have taken an aggressive stance in the matter, and the local administration and China both have been repeatedly advised to exhibit restraint. The United States and the United Kingdom has adopted a more aggressive stand and have indicated imposing sanctions against China, as well as the pro-Chinese administration in Hong Kong.

G7 countries support the autonomy of Hong KongAgainst this background, the western countries assured support to the agitators and democratic values, in the Hong Kong issue, during the G7 summit. The G7 group clarified its stand saying ‘In 1984, the United Kingdom and China signed an agreement regarding Hong Kong. This agreement is significant for the G7, on the Hong Kong issue. At the same time, we are appealing to the agitators to avoid violence.’

The agreement regarding Hong Kong was signed between the United Kingdom and China on 19th December 1984, in Beijing. The agreement contained the principle ‘One Country, Two Systems’,agreeing that the rules and regulations of the communist Chinese government would not be applicable in Hong Kong. There was an important provision that the liberal capitalist system and lifestyle will continue, as it is,in Hong Kong till the year 2047. The western countries are alleging that the amendments to the constitution and the new laws passed in Hong Kong are a violation of the agreement.

Therefore, the mention of the 1984 agreement in the statement issued by the G7 becomes vital. The G7 is giving a message to China that if it continues to interfere in Hong Kong, in violation of the 1984 agreement, the western countries will take an aggressive stand against it.
