Elections for Tibetan Parliament-in-exile held in India

Dharamshala: China had warned a few days ago that India should not use the Tibet issue. But India has disregarded that warning. Elections were held for the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, in Dharamshala, on Saturday. Sources informed that the elections were being held as the term of the previous Central Tibetan Administration had ended. Only last month, the US Congress rocked China by passing an independent law for Tibet. The elections held in India following that is disturbing China further.

parliament-in-exileThe Tibetan citizens who had taken refuge in India in 1960 had formed an independent government. After that, elections are held every five years for the new government, and this year it was the 17th elections. Nearly 125,000 Tibetan citizens live in various countries, including India, and 80,000 out of these have registered as voters. Forty-five people will be elected, including the chief of the Central Tibetan Administration.

Against the background of the India-China tension on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh and the actions initiated by the United States against China, the issue of Tibet has once again come on the anvil. The United States has passed an independent law, the Tibetan Policy and Support Act 2020, for Tibet and has appointed a senior official as a coordinator. Positive reactions have been emanating from India, and demand for an active role in the Tibet issue is gaining ground.

The stand adopted by India and the United States has upset China, and it has started issuing warnings against this. A few days ago, the Chinese embassy in India had warned that if India interferes in the internal Chinese matters, it will affect bilateral relations. The embassy also pointed out that India had accepted Tibet as an integral part of China.

Despite the Chinese warnings, India has made all the facilities and systems available to the new government of Tibetan citizens. A strong reaction may be received from China regarding Indian actions. Although India has accepted that Tibet is a part of China, the statesmen are demanding that India should change its stand regarding Tibet due to the Chinese violation of India’s agreements and that China is unwilling to keep the promises made to India.

China is implementing projects in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, a sovereign Indian territory, without the Indian consent, in collaboration with Pakistan. The Chinese military violated the agreement with India by launching a cowardly attack on the Indian soldiers. The senior statesmen are warning that China will not abide by any agreements even in the future. The logic forwarded by the statesmen is that in this scenario, India needs to change its position regarding Tibet, and China cannot be pressurised without doing so.

Meanwhile, the LAC, referred to as the border between India and China, is actually the India-Tibet border. Lobsang Sangay, the Chief of the Central Tibetan Administration, claimed that India should officially declare that China dashed against the Indian border after acquiring the Tibetan territory. This stand of the Tibetan leaders becomes vital against the background of the flared up border dispute between India and China. It is apparent that China, who shows extreme sensitivity regarding the Tibet issue, is feeling the pressure.
