The Taliban have taken control of some Afghan province-capitals. The US Central Intelligence Agency has expressed a concern that the Taliban could reach the Afghan capital, Kabul, in just a few weeks if it continues to forge ahead in this way. In such a situation, the Afghan government seems to have sought India’s help. The Afghan government seeks help of the Indian Air Force (IAF). So, it has appealed to India accordingly. The news broke in the media, citing sources in the Afghan government. Earlier, Afghan Vice President Saleh, Foreign Minister Atmar and Afghanistan’s ambassador to India had demanded Indian military assistance. But reports of air cooperation have not yet been confirmed at the official level.

Pakistani media had claimed that India was ready to deploy troops in Afghanistan. Some Pakistani analysts have been blaming that India is behind the airstrikes of the Taliban. The Taliban has not blamed India for this. However, Pakistani analysts have been inciting the Taliban against India, saying that India had launched airstrikes on the Taliban to save the Afghan government and army. India has stated its support for the elected government of Afghanistan. Indian leaders had also assured that India would leave the Afghan people to fend for themselves under no circumstances. However, this does not mean that India will intervene militarily in Afghanistan.

India has many other options to support the Afghan government and army against the Taliban. It plays a crucial role in drawing the international community’s attention to the Taliban’s bloodshed in Afghanistan and the Pakistani conspiracy behind it. India had drawn the world’s attention to the situation in Afghanistan by holding a special meeting of the UN Security Council. As a result, international opposition to the Taliban is growing. Pakistan also had to declare that it would not recognize the Taliban if it used force to acquire Afghanistan.

However, the question – whether India will provide military assistance to Afghanistan in response to the Afghan government’s demand has still not been officially answered. Former military officers and strategic analysts also express conflicting views on the issue.
