New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has left for a visit to Russia at a time when an Indo-China war may be sparked at any moment. It is being reported by quoting government sources that discussions will be held in the meeting, regarding the supply of spares and other materials for Sukhoi fighter jets, T-90 tanks and submarines on an urgent basis. Russia had indicated that it would supply the 33 Sukhoi-30 MKI and MiG-29 fighter jets requested by the Indian Airforce at an early date when the purchase proposal was submitted to the Indian government. Against this background, the significance of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit increases further.
Four days ago, The Indian Defence Minister received an invitation to attend the function organised to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Soviet Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany in the second world war. Around the same time, 20 Indian soldiers were martyred in a Chinese attack, and the tension on the Indo-Chinese border increased tremendously. Despite this, Rajnath Singh accepted the invitation.
During the three-day visit to Russia, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be holding talks with the Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and other high-ranking Russian officials. India has an urgent need for spares and other material for Russian made Sukhoi-30 fighter jets, submarines and T-90 tanks. The government sources informed that demand would be made with Russia that the spares should be immediately shipped and instead of sending the materials through sea freight, Russia should airlift the materials. India will also be demanding that the supply of S-400 air defence system should also be made as early as possible.
Russia has indicated supporting India in the border dispute with China. The media are pointing out that Russia has jolted China, indicating readiness to supply fighter jets to India. All the countries of the world are distraught with China over the Coronavirus pandemic crisis, and the Russian stand is not different. Moreover, the Russian position in the world is being threatened due to the increasing Chinese influence because of the liberal use of its financial might, and analysts are pointing out that the Russian interests are under threat because of this.
It has been exposed that China, who was a major importer of Russian defence equipment, has stolen Russian technology and has started manufacturing the same products in China. Therefore, even if Russia is aligning with China against the United States, it is fully aware that China is not an ally who can be trusted completely.
