Coronavirus cases in the country cross 123,000, 2940 cases reported from Maharashtra in 24 hours

New Delhi/Mumbai: 148 Coronavirus related deaths were reported from the country, in the last 24 hours, whereas, there was an addition of 6,088 new cases. This is the highest number of cases reported in one day. Before this, 5,611 new cases were reported on Wednesday. The Health ministry declared, on Friday morning, that the total number of cases in the country reached 118,447. But it has been revealed that the total number of cases have crossed 123,000 by Friday evening. 2940 new cases were reported from Maharashtra alone.

The situation in the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Delhi has become a cause for concern, given the consistently increasing number of Coronavirus cases. The number of cases from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh also have started showing an increase, because of the migrant labourers returning from these states. On Friday, the number of deaths reported from Maharashtra was 63, whereas 2940 new cases were reported. This is the highest number of cases reported from Maharashtra in one single day. On Thursday, Maharashtra had reported 64 Coronavirus deaths, whereas, 2,345 new cases had been reported. Till date, the pandemic has claimed 1,517 lives and the total number of cases in the state has reached 45,582.

Mumbai, the economic capital of the country, has become the biggest hot spot of Coronavirus. In the last 24 hours, Coronavirus claimed 27 lives in Mumbai and 1,751 new cases were reported. On Thursday, 41 people had died and 1,382 new cases had been reported. The total number of deaths in Mumbai has reached 909 and the total number of cases has crossed 27,000.

800 new Coronavirus cases were reported from Tamil Nadu and 567 cases out of these are from Chennai. The total number of cases in the state has reached 14,753. After Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the highest number of cases are in Gujarat. The number of cases in Gujarat has reached 13,273. In the last 24 hours, Gujarat has reported 29 deaths and 363 new cases. Delhi has reported 14 deaths and 660 new cases, in one day. This takes the total number of cases in Delhi to 12,660. The number of cases has started increasing in Uttar Pradesh, with the return of migrant labourers. 127 new cases were reported from Uttar Pradesh, taking the total number of cases above 5,000.

Meanwhile, the planning commission claimed that the timely imposition of lockdown, saved anywhere between 37 to 78 thousand lives and if the lockdown had not been imposed, the total number of cases would have increased by anywhere between 1.4 to 2.9 million. The government informed that this data was based on a survey.

Along with the increase in the number of cases, the rate of recovery also is improving. The rate of recovery has reached 40% and 46,000 patients have recovered fully, till date. The union home ministry has instructed the states to impose curfew between 7pm and 7am and ban leaving from the homes for anything other than essential activities. The union home ministry also has appealed to take measures to stop the spread of the Coronavirus in the containment zones.
