Chinese ambassador barred from British parliament

London/Beijing – The British Parliament has denied entry to Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang after fierce opposition from members of the British Parliament. Members of Parliament have taken an aggressive stance that the Chinese ambassador cannot enter parliament when the Chinese regime has imposed sanctions on British MPs. The Chinese embassy in Britain has criticised the decision by the British Parliament as cowardly and despicable.

Britain has taken an aggressive stance against China on issues like 5G technology, Hong Kong, South China Sea and Uyghur ethnicity. The British MPs have criticised China on the ongoing atrocities against the Uyghurs by China and are moving towards declaring it a genocide. Against this backdrop, China imposed sanctions on seven British MPs in March.

Britain had expressed strong resentment against the sanctions. Despite this, a pro-China group in the British Parliament had invited Chinese ambassadors for an event in parliament. As soon as this matter came to light, the MPs facing the sanctions wrote a letter to the Speaker. The issue raised was that the sanctions imposed by China were a violation of the members and the rights of the British Parliament. Against such a backdrop, granting access to the Ambassador would be tantamount to approving restrictions, MPs claimed.

Senior British minister Sajid Javid supported the decision. At the same time, it could affect relations between the two countries, the Chinese embassy said.
