China objects to G7 stand on Hong Kong

Beijing: China has opposed to the stand adopted by the Foreign Ministers of the G7 member countries. The statement of the Chinese foreign ministry reiterates that Hong Kong is an internal Chinese issue, and warns that others should not interfere in its matters. The foreign ministry statement also claims that senior Chinese leader Yang Jiechi has clarified to the US Secretary of State during their meeting that China is not going to back down on the Hong Kong law. A political conflict between the international community and China looks inevitable over the Hong Kong issue, because of this adamant stand adopted by China.

Last month, a bill named National Security Law for Hong Kong was presented in the Chinese parliament. This bill is considered to be one more effort of the ruling Chinese communist party to tighten its grip over Hong Kong. Strong repercussions have been felt on the international level of these Chinese efforts regarding Hong Kong against the background of the Coronavirus pandemic. The statement issued by G7, which has European countries along with the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia as members are considered to be a part of the campaign started by the international community against China.

The G7 countries have made a strong demand that the new Chinese National Security Law does not abide by the constitution of Hong Kong, and the provisions of the agreement to be signed between the United Kingdom and China. There is a threat to the One Country Two Systems principle due to the passage of this law. There is a fear that the autonomy of Hong Kong, which is a vital factor in the prosperity of Hong Kong, being trampled by this law. Therefore, the Chinese government should reconsider the implementation of this new law.

The Chinese rulers have brought different bills in the years 2003 as well as in 2014 and 2019 for the comprehensive control over Hong Kong. In 2014, the Chinese rulers succeeded in pressurising Hong Kong and imposing the bill. But last year, the people of Hong Kong forced the Chinese rulers to retract, posing a strong challenge through massive demonstrations. Infuriated by this, the Chinese rulers started taking efforts to tighten their grip on Hong Kong by bringing the National Security Law.

On Thursday, the draft of the National Security Law to be implemented in Hong Kong was prepared in the Standing Committee of the Chinese parliament. The provisions of the law allow the Chinese security agencies to take action in Hong Kong. The international community has become aggressive against the interference of the Chinese rulers in Hong Kong, and the stand taken by the G7 is an integral part of the global campaign. This stand clearly shows the unity of the international community against China, and there are clear indications that China is being cornered over the Hong Kong issue.
