Last Year, Meng Wanzhou, the Executive Director and Chief Financial officer of Huawei, a leading company in China was taken into custody on 1st December, at Vancouver International airport, Canada. After hearing of the case, Meng was sanctioned bail. Moreover, the US demanded the extradition process of Meg from Canada and Canada has also given a positive response over this.

canada, china, chinese fighterOwing to this, China has made Meng’s release a prestige issue and is now targeting Canada. Initially, after issuing a strict warning to Canada, the Chinese began targeting Canadian authorities and industrialists as the legal process was underway. In December 2018, former Canadian diplomat, Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur, Michael Spavor were taken into custody by the Chinese authorities. These measures had been taken under the offence of being a threat to China’s national security, informed the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

However, the reason behind these measures was to pressurize for the release of Meng. China dismissed the efforts of Canada for the release of its citizens on bilateral and International levels. Instead, it has been criticizing Canada for acting against Meng and Huawei. As a result, China has banned all the meat products and Canola oil imports from Canada.

While preventing Canada’s main imports, reasons for food security, quality and false certificates have been made; however, the action was on ‘Meng’. From this point of view, China has stopped political dialogue with Canada on this issue. On the contrary, Canada is firm on its stand against ‘Meng’, and it has refused to withdraw. Similarly, it has been claimed that the International Community has supported Canada on the issue of the Canadian citizens held in China.

On this background, the analysts have predicted the possibility that the patrolling of China’s warplanes could fuel the tensions between the two nation.
