Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles visits India

New Delhi: Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles is on a four-day visit to India. He held talks with Indian External Affairs S. Jaishankar. The Prime Minister Anthony Albanese government, which recently came to power in Australia, is desirous of strengthening cooperation with India. Defence Minister Marles said that Australia would enhance cooperation with India in the interest of the Indo-Pacific region. The stand adopted by Australia, while the hegemonic Chinese activities against nations in the Indo-Pacific and Australia are on the rise, has become important even from the Indian point of view.

After that, Defence Minister held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. The Australian Defence Minister will hold bilateral talks with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday. Defence Minister Marles said that he was very keen on these talks. Defence Minister Marles announced on social media that he would be starting his day with Yoga on International Yoga Day.

Only last week, the Australian Defence Minister had visited Japan. At this time, Defence Minister Marles and Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi decided to make the defence cooperation between the two countries more comprehensive. The Indian visit of the Australian Defence Minister following that clarifies the Australian priorities. Given the increasing Chinese threat, Australia has adopted a policy to unite countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Australia has initiated rapid steps to increase this cooperation not only on the defence and military levels but also on the economic level. Australia has signed a free trade agreement with India for this purpose.
