Late on Thursday night, a merchant ship, Mercer Street, travelling about 300 kilometres from Oman‘s capital, Muscat, came under attack. The vessel belonged to Zodiac Maritime Company of London-based Israeli businessman Aal Ofer, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.

The Israeli company had initially declined to comment. But on Friday afternoon, the company acknowledged that Mercer Street had been attacked. However, it was clarified that the company was operating the ships, but it is owned by Japan. However, in the wake of tensions between Israel and Iran, the international media is claiming that the attack on the ship is a cause for concern.

Meanwhile, attacks on Israeli and Iranian cargo and military ships sailing through the Indian Ocean, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and Syrian waters have increased in recent months. It appears to be part of an ongoing undeclared war between Israel and Iran.

Analysts are also pointing out that ships connected to Israel and bound for the UAE are being targeted. A cargo ship bound for the UAE was also attacked in early July. Both attacks are seen in the context of established cooperation between Israel and the UAE.
